Battle of Bhima Koregaon– Koregaon is a small village in Pune district of Maharashtra. Bhima-Koregaon is famous with an important phase of Maratha history. On January 1, 1818, a Dalit-dominated British Army had defeated a Peshwa army, led by Peshwa Bajirao II, in Koregaon. The battle attained a legendary stature for Dalits. It was the sign of the win as a victory of the Mahars against the injustices perpetuated by the Peshwas.

A pillar, known as Vijay Sthamb (victory pillar), installed by the East India Company. As well as, this pillar made in memory of those who fought for them in the battle. It is at this pillar that thousands of Dalits come to pay respect every year on January 1.

This battle is the part of third Aangal- Maratha war. Besides it, British east India was appointing many counsel members in Maharashtra. And Maratha community facing the battle with East India company. As well as, the Battle of Koregaon (also called the Battle of Koregaon Bhima) was fought on 1 January 1818 between the British East India Company and the Peshwa faction of the Maratha Confederacy, at Koregaon Bhima. The Peshwa dispatched around 2,000 soldiers to attack the force which sought entrenchment in Koregaon.

The 1818 Battle of Koregaon is of importance for Dalits. On 1 January 1818, 800 troops of the East India Company’s Bombay Presidency Army, with a large number of Mahars predominant among them, defeated a numerically superior force of the Peshwa Baji Rao II.

So this battle is the symbol of the Dalit community win against peshwa. After this battle a pillar was manufactured in this village as a memory. And every year Dalit go to place and offer a homage their ancestors. Ambedkar also visited this place and pay off homage.

According to sources Stan Swamy or Stanislaus Lourduswamy died 5 July 2021. Further all, He was detained past few times in the prison with the UAPA act. He also requested to change his hospital and bail but High court refused to bail. So he died in the prison. Some sources says that he was the human activist.
